MG4 guiding the next generation of drivers
There has officially been a jolt of electricty for the learner drivers of Geelong.
The MG4 has become the first electric vehicle to be selected to be a part of the City of Greater Geelong's L2P Program, which aims to increase opportunities for the region's L-platers on their journey towards a full licence.
The L2P program, created by the Transport Accident Commission sees learner drivers who lack access to a supervising driver or vehicle match up with volunteer driving mentors
The newest vehicle in their fleet is a sparkling white MG4, which marks the ninth electric vehicle in the City's fleet and the first electric vehicle to be used in the program statewide.
LSP volunteer Andrew Cleary was the mastermind in proposing an electric car, while Rex Gorell MG helped bring the concept to life by providing the vehicle to the organisation.
Geelong Mayor Trent Sullivan spoke highly of the L2P program, and its transition to having an electric vehicle in their fleet.
"The L2P program has had a major impact on those who have participated," he said.
"A driver's licence equals freedom and independence for a young person, so the L2P program is truly life changing."
"The selection of an electric vehicle (The MG4) aligns with the City's goals around protecting the environment and preventing pollution."
During 2023, 186 learner drivers participated in the program and 65 learners grauted from L2P with their probationary licence.
Participation in the program is open to eligible young people between the ages of 16 and 21 (and in some circumstances, up to 23).
