On the Silk Road with MG
As a brand that is entrenched in a vibrant British heritage and renowned for engineering motor cars that stand the test of time, MG has naturally amassed a loyal fan base all across the world.
United in their desire for discovery and deep-seated love and devotion for the brand, a group of MG enthusiasts concocted the ambition to plan a pilgrimage to the home of MG. Traversing two continents, they toured the famed Silk Road, in a cavalcade of adventure and fun.
The group gathered their squadron of eight MGs, loaded them on to two forty-foot long containers, and whisked them away to the start of their journey: Thailand. From their Bangkok vantage point, the group headed north through Cambodia, Laos and China, then into Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, before finishing the Silk Road part of the trip by travelling through northern Iran, and on to Turkey. From Turkey, the team continued their journey to Europe to finally end the trip in Abingdon, England, and pay homage to the homeland of MG.
While in China, the travellers were treated to an exclusive tour of SAIC Motor, where modern MGs are produced. Led by SAIC's marketing and brand managers, the teams witnessed the latest in automotive car manufacturing and learned about the mammoth production capacity of the factory, where more than 400 MGs are produced daily.
The three-month long expedition, traversing more than 60 cities, is a testament to the enduring devotion MG enthusiasts have of the brand. Among the touring fleet, a burgundy 1968 MGB GT, a British racing green 1969 MGB GT, and a 1972 MGB Roadster; MG's legacy for adventure and excitement continues to live on in the marques exciting modern offerings, with the MG3, MG6 and MG GS.
Beginning in April, and ending in mid-July 2017, the team documented their immense adventure here.
