MG4 wins Wheels' Best Electric Vehicle (Under $80K) for 2024
The MG4 continues to blaze a trail in the electric vehicle market, being announced as Wheels' Best Electric Vehicle (Under $80k) for 2024, adding to the growing trophy pool for the award-winning hatch.
Since launching in August 2023, the MG4 range has been widely praised and recognised, including winning the Carsales Car of The Year, Gizmodo Australia's Top EV of 2023, and RAC's Best Drive in the Small Car category for 2023.
In the tough battle for the prestigious title, Wheels journalist John Law said, "Performance of intended function and innovation" were the two ciritcal components of criteria for the final three contestants after they each proved "their mettle in value, comfort, and driving excellence against direct rivals."
Breaking down all three finalists, it was the MG4 that Law saw outright as the overall winner.
He said, "Not only has MG constructed an engaging and rewarding hatchback that drives with the maturity of long-standing European nameplates, but also one that's affordable to the masses."
"It proves price parity with combustion cars is coming, and that's enough to cement the MG4's status as our best electric vehicle under $80,000."
Law also noted the quality difference of the MG4 compared to it's price-point competitors.
"The MG4 is a genuinely spacious hatchback that could be used as a family transport. Importantly, the MG4 annihilates its price-point rivals. They don't come close to the completeness of MG's little hatch and we reckon it'll be some time before other manufacturers even think about playing in the sub-$50k realm."
"You can feel the work of deeply talented engineers in the MG4's chassis balance. It's fun to punt, espeically with the Excite's 17-inch alloys and low-grip rubber."
"The natural throttle calibration, brake feel, and ability to adjust regeneration efficacy - including a one-pedal driving option - aren't taken for granted."
The MG4's recognition demonstrates MG's commitment to making EV motoring more accessible for all Australians. With four variants providing a range of choice for motorists, along with the performance model, XPOWER, the MG4 has proven widely popular with Australians.
MG Motor Australia CEO Peter Ciao celebrated the MG4's recognition as a leading vehicle in Australia's growing electric vehicle market.
"All of the team at MG are very proud of the MG4. It is supporting making EV driving accessible to more Australians. The recognition from the industry for its driving dynamics, the ride and performance shows the capabilities EVs hold."
